Dr. Kang Young Woo

Until the weakpoint becomes glory

 

Have you ever heard of Dr. Kang Young Woo. He is the first doctor with visual impairment. He is known in the United States, and also known in Korea because of documentary containing his life, Moreover he is more famous in Korean Christianity. That is why he is the first man to gain a doctorate in the United States as a visually impaired person, and his dramatic life is a great lesson for many people.

Dr. Kang Yeong-woo was brought up by his widowed mother. When he was in junior high school, his eyes were injured by a soccer ball by accident. After the treatment for two years and two major operations had failed, he eventually became blind. To make matters worse, even his mother, who had a great expectation for her son, died in the shock of her son becoming blind. But that was not the end either. he barely lived with the help of his older sister working at the factory, but his older sister died because of overwork. The rest of his siblings were scattered and adopted. No one would be capable of this unimaginable disaster. At first, Dr. Kang Young-woo thought that this was a godly disaster. But he did not lose faith in the end. In 1968, he entered the department of education in Yonsei University after excruciating effort and graduated with a proxime accessit from the College of Liberal Arts in Yonsei University. Has God's good fortune ever started since then? After that, he met a beautiful spouse who could be said to be the best luck in his lifetime. The lady was a female college student who cared for the handicapped by volunteer work. Furthermore he went to America with her and entered the University of Pittsburgh and got a Master of Education, a Master of Psychology, and a Ph.D. in Education.

He then became the deputy minister for the White House and later he confessed that he could not have reached such a high position if his eyes were perfect and he could not have done such a great work to create an important legal system for the disabled in America and in the world if his eyes were perfect. His weakness changed his life and caused God's power to work. The Bible says that the power is made perfect in weakness. If Dr. Kang had not been blind, his two sons could not become ophthalmologist and legal counsel, and he would never have come to the Dictionary of American Educational Biography and Biographical Directory of the world's leading expert.
