Albert Mehrabian, an honorary professor at UCLA's Department of Psychology, has published the following results through his book, The Message of Silence. He analyzed that the key point to decide the first impression and to feel favorable impression is the voice on 38 percent and the body language on 55 percent (35 percent, attitude 20 percent). On the other hand, what you say is only a 7 percent influence. That is, in effective communication, elements such as speech, facial expressions, glances, and gestures account for as much as 93 percent. This tells us that what is visible is more important than content. In other words, action is more important than words.

I want to say this to someone who is afraid to talk to foreigners. When we talk to foreigners, we are afraid that we will not be able to understand the contents of the conversation and are reluctant to communicate. But according to this law, the content of communication is only 7 percent. We can reach out to people with a lot of gestures, facial expressions, or soft voices. I heard that there are many people in my country who are still shrinking because foreigners will still speak to. If we do not understand the contents, we can understand the situation as much as we can with the expression, the tone and the gesture, and we can communicate with only English ability learned in elementary school.
